The Metropolitan of New Zealand, His Eminence Amfilochios




His Eminence Metropolitan Amfilochios (Adamantios Tsoukos), was born in 1938 in the town of Lardos on the island of Rhodes, which in the Dodecanese Islands. He attended the Patmiada Ecclesiastical School and entered the Theological School of Halki in 1959.


On 8. December 1962, he was tonsured a monk in the Church of the Holy Trinity at the Halki Theological School. The following day he was ordained a reverend deacon by His Eminence Metropolitan Maximos of Stavroupoleos. He was  ordained a Priest on 9. July 1963 again by the His Eminence Metropolitan Maximos . That  same year he graduated from the Halki Theological school with the dissertation entitled: “Dogmatic teachings of the Koran.”


From 1964 to 1968 he served the Holy Monastery of Evangelismos (Annunciation) in Patmos under the spiritual direction of  the Holy Elder Amphilochios Makris of the Patmos and the Dodecanese Islands. In 1969, he was appointed professor of the Patmiada Ecclesiastical School.


In 1972 he went to Africa to serve as a missionary in Kenya, Tanzania and Zaire. While there he was establishing churches, organizing missionary centres, instructed and baptizing multitude of Africans. In 1974 he was given the title of Archimandrite by the Patriarch of Alexandria Nicholas in the Church of Evangelismos in Louboubasi -  Zaire. In 1978 he returned to Patimada School resuming his former responsibilities until 1989.


In 1989 he came to Rhodes, at the invitation of the Metropolitan of Rhodes, His Eminence Apostolos, as a sacred preacher. Then on 22. May 1990, he was enthroned Abbot of the Holy Monastery of the Archangel Michael – Tharri. He was elected a Bishop by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate on  15. June 2005 and on 9. July he was consecrated by His Eminence Metropolitan Kyrillos of Rhodes in the Evangelismos Cathedral in Rhodes. He was elected Metropolitan of New Zealand on 13. October 2005.
